Ice-cream makers frozen out as corn price rises

Suzy Jagger and Carl Mortished

What’s the connection between ethanol, the biofuel produced from corn, and a cherry vanilla ice-cream? Answer: the first is responsible for pushing up the price of the other.

This month, the price of milk in the United States surged to a near-record in part because of the increasing costs of feeding a dairy herd. The corn feed used to feed cattle has almost doubled in price in a year as demand has grown for the grain to produce ethanol.

Christina Seid, whose family have been making ice-cream at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for 28 years, said yesterday that she expected to have to raise her prices, along with all competitors in the short term. "We are holding out as long as we can, but prices will rise," Ms Seid said.

Amy Green’s Ivanna Cone ice-cream emporium in Lincoln, Nebraska, has already raised its prices for a small cone to $3.50 before tax, up from $2.95 a few months ago. She also estimates that she is paying $150 more a week for the butterfat that she uses in her ice-cream.

The squeeze on ice-cream makers, chocolate manufacturers and pizza companies – all of whom use dairy produce as a raw material – is set to tighten as the price of a gallon of milk in the US – up 55 per cent in the past 12 months in some American states – is now the same as a gallon of petrol, with dairy prices accelerating faster than the cost of fuel.

Prices for dairy products have also risen because of increasing demand from China and the Middle East along with the drought in Australia, reduced subsidies in the European Union and the rocketing cost of corn.

The end of America as we knew it!

Have you read about he NAFTA Superhighway project? If not, I suggest you read up on it. It is the beginning of the end for American freedom. It gives the government the right to restrict travel and forces what will soon be known as a national ID card on all travelers. I just love the government that takes OUR money to do things we really don't want, not to mention, have very little to say about it.

Not only the above, but millions of American home owners will have their property taken away without fair compensation, for the development of this fiasco. And they are using "cockroach" mentality to sneak this whole deal through a little bit at a time in the dark, where no one will see.

I can see the people of this country eventually making a move to take back our country. It's inevetable.

Chavez: History repeats itself

Our wonderful friend, Hugo Chavez, President, or should I say totalitarian dictator, of Venezuela, has given us all a lesson in history, His latest feat of generosity to his people is the shutting down of the country's most popular television station, Radio Caracas Television (RCTV) last night.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,275853,00.html

In an effort to quiet opposition to his government, Chavez refused to renew the license of this station, the most popular in the country for 53 years. It's like what the liberals are trying to do in this country with the Fairness Doctrine, trying to shut up talk radio. The world of freedom, liberty, and free speech is eroding away by the minority, the "elite", the wealthy. Not all the free oil in the world can replace freedom. What are we willing to give up?

What I am

Even though it was penned in 2004, it is still valid today. Although, you don't have to be a Republican to be this way, but I do think you have to be a Conservative.

Jenna Jameson and the Democrats

Prominent porn star Jenna Jameson said Democrats are better for the pornography industry — and the Bill Clinton administration was “the best.”

In an interview with PR.com, Jameson — author of “How To Make Love Like a Porn Star” — said she prefers Hillary Clinton in the 2008 presidential race: “I love Hillary. I think that in some ways she’s pretty conservative for a Democrat, but I would love to have a woman in office.”

Asked if the climate of the porn industry is different under a Democratic administration compared to a Republican one, James said: “Absolutely . . . When Republicans are in office, the problem is, a lot of times they try to put their crosshairs on the adult industry, to make a point. It’s sad, when there are so many different things that are going on in the world: war, and people are dying of genocide.”

Demonstrating a questionable grasp of the U.S. Constitution, Jameson also declared: “The Clinton administration was the best years for the adult industry and I wish that Clinton would run again. I would love to have him back in office.”

Immagration Bill

The immortal Senator Ted Kennedy has put together a new Immigration Bill. People on all sides like it and hate it. I personally don't like any bill that gives aliens anything when the first thing they do upon entering this country is an illegal act.

I also do not approve of elected officials passing a bill that will use my tax dollars to buy votes with entitlements. NO WAY, JOSE!!

If the good Senator wants to buy votes, fine ... go for it! ... but, use your own money. All these fact calf's in the Congress and Senate are far from poor.

Political Correctness

I think PC is a lot of crap! Just another ploy by a select few to try to control the majority. Why should we play that game?

Hong Kong Authorities Ponder Labeling Bible 'Indecent'

Report: Hong Kong Authorities Ponder Labeling Bible 'Indecent'
Wednesday, May 16, 2007

The Good Book isn't clean enough for Hong Kong.
Residents of the city are calling for an "indecent" label for the Bible, saying the text contains passages that are too gory for young eyes, Reuters reports.
At least 838 complaints had been registered Wednesday with the city's Television and Entertainment Licensing authority after an anonymous Web site, truthbible.net, said the Bible "made one tremble" with its sexual and violent content, including rape and incest, the news agency reports.
The Chinese city has been debating the merits of indecency since a recent sex column published in the Chinese University's "Student Press" magazine asked readers about their violent sexual fantasies.
Click here for FOXNews.com's Asia center.
That column was branded as indecent by the Obscene Articles Tribunal.
If the Bible is labeled indecent in Hong Kong, people over the age of 18 will be the only ones able to purchase the book, and it would have to be sold with a warning label wrapped around the book.
The Web site truthbible.net already includes an English-language warning: "Legal Disclaimer Warning: This Web site contains Bible material which may offend and may not be distributed, circulated, sold, hired, given, lent, shown, played or projected to a person under the age of 18 years."
But the prospect of the underage Bible ban has local ministers scoffing.
"If there is rape mentioned in the Bible, it doesn't mean it encourages those activities," Reuters quoted Reverend Wu Chi-wai, Protestant minister, as saying. "It's just common sense ... I don't think that criticism will have strong support from the public."
